Tom, Dick and Harry ごく普通のおっさんです

I want to vent a little today. I don't know why sometimes people think I'm a little special person like having a successful life.. Is that because of my videos? What made you think I was? For example, on youtube, may be I act like I'm not like everyone else in the video(I do not mean to) but I am just a Tom, Dick and Harry. I think I always try not to show myself like ''I am special'' in my videos but still some people tend to think I am a little special like they want to be like me. Actually,THIS HAPPENS TO ME IN REAL LIFE, too...To be honest, it kinda annoys me...I've never felt happy so far. But come to think of it, if I have to answer what the reason is for this, I think it's something to do with my behave? May be? Where is the answer...Only god knows?...

Don't overvalue runnyrunny xD

  1. Hi Taro,
I don't think people mean to gush over you and I don’t think they intend to make out you're more special than everyone else. The reasons are complex and may come down to the following:

    1) I get the impression many of your YouTube viewers are young (under 25) and may be still living at home and are yet to experience living out of home and having to make a living. Because of this, they compare their living experience to yours and think that you are ‘rich’ because you are living as a regular adult when compared to them, are able to afford the things in life that they wish they could. I don’t mean this in a ‘hater’ way, but if you ever remember being young and wishing how you’d like to move out of home and live your own life and wishing about all the things you wanted to buy/do in life if you had money etc, it gets projected in the comments by the posters such as: ‘whoa! You’re rich Runny!’ etc.

But in reality, as an adult, you have to work to make money and save up in order to be able to buy and do things. Not only that, it’s difficult as an adult to make time to do the things you enjoy-it’s easier when young as you have more free time. When you’re young, you don’t see/know what it takes to live as an independent adult in life.

    2) The internet is a strange place. There is a lot of rubbish out there on the net and on YouTube. Your videos demonstrate care and effort put into it and it really shows. Because your videos are ‘polished’ and you obviously spend time and effort making these videos, it can be interpreted as you being a successful/rich in comparison to other amateur videos. Your videos may be amateur, but your presentation quality is better than most out on YouTube.

3)I hope I can describe this well to you.
People like to compare each other and in particular, people like to see what is different about others in comparison to oneself. I find that many people are very interested in Japan. From a Western perspective, it’s seen as a place full of contrasts that you don’t get here (at least in Australia anyway). When I was young I had this idea that Japan was going to be crazy place with cool technology, lots of sushi, ramen, Pocky, crazily dressed people and beautiful Zen gardens. This ties in with point #1.
As I got older and started making money, when I finally got to travel to Japan, I found all the naïve ideas I had about Japan were not true. I found it very normal like Australia. However there was much I saw in Japan which I compared to back home and I was constantly contrasting the differences between Japan, my country and my own personal life.

When you show videos about Japan daily life, I think people contrast that to their own and think what you experience daily is more exciting than their own because it’s just different and not their own.

    4) You may be every Tom, Dick and Harry, but your attitude is refreshingly different. I think people pick up on as something they don’t have or see often and that’s why people think you’re special. Even if you aren’t happy, your attitude towards life and possibly your experience of living overseas has shaped you in a way that makes you a more ‘wholesome’ person. I think this is the ‘vibe’ for lack of better word is what they sense and that makes you ‘different’ and treat you as a little ‘special’.
Also the fact that your videos have this charm to them makes brings joy to many people and you obviously derive joy from it too shows in your videos and viewers gravitate to that positive energy you bring. I notice you comment ‘no haters/go away haters’ is testament to the fact you don’t want to bring negativity in your life-and that is a sign of good character in a person. Your attitude you display in your videos is very similar (at least to me) to Hikosaemon-the New Zealand J-Vlogger.

Sorry for the long comment.I wish I had a video camera to explain better.
    You’re a good person runnyrunny! It shows-and that’s why you’re special-just like everyone else =p

  2. Just quickly to add on my last post.
The way you act is refreshingly honest and unpretentious. You don't act fake. You come across as being yourself and that is what people see is a special quality to you! So I guess it is the way you act that leads people to treat you as special =p

  3. Other anon, I think 'gush' is a good word choice.

Young people especially like to exaggerate due to inexperience. (like you mentioned)

If people are gushing over you in real life, it probably means they want to be your friend.

I know where I am, for us Americans, sometimes being gushy is our version of being polite. I think we also like giving exaggerated compliments to people we like (as if the bigger the compliment, the better, even if it is too much and not sincere).

  4. Thanks for your opinion! I know but I don't want it in real life you know. Youtube is fine because it's just internet. May be I get a little different opinions from Japanese people if they have to comment. Because I never got this feeling when I was in US. May be it's one of culture difference. I may want to see what happens if I really get dress like ladies in my daily life from now on xD

  5. IF you start dressing like a woman in daily life, imagine how much more special treatment you would get!
Women always get treated like they are just that little more special! XD

  6. Hello Taro! :)
Well, i don’t know why people like you, but i know why i do. It’s because the way you are, the way you truly are, and not the way you pretend to be, in front of camera. That’s so rare, for people to be sincere and themselves when exposed to the world. Because they are afraid to others opinions, and pretend to be better than they actually are. But you are just human in your videos, you make mistakes, and may not be in your best sometimes… but that’s what make people to be identified with you, because you are just like everyone else. You might not have the most impressive and brilliant videos on youtube, but they are simplistic, true and free of “makeup”.

That’s just my opinion, but I hope it makes sense to you.
And don’t be harsh on people when they compliment you… ^^’ you might be uncomfortable with it, that’s because you never wanted to be a celebrity Lol. I don’t think people overvalue you, I think you undervalue yourself a little bit.

I hope i've expressed myself well... i'm not used to write in english. ^^'

    :)

  10. Runny (if you don't mind me calling you that), one of your most appealing qualities, to me, is the fact that you're an average person. Thank you for providing a little window into modern Japanese culture and lifestyle for people like me, who are entirely across the planet but wish to know more about a culture so different from our own. Also, I'm sorry that this is such a late response.

  12. I came here the long way around. I was watching an old show of McHale's Navy in which Fuji was trying to explain how to make sukiyaki.
"Use plenty of shirataki," he said.
In trying to find out what shirataki was, I came across the song by Kyu Sakamoto that some American record producer horribly misnamed for its American release. Like you I don't get it. "Ue o muite arukou" (I walk looking up) is a beautiful song. I suspect the American heard the word tsukino, and said to himself, "sue kee... sookee, sookie what? Oh! sukiyaki! That's a Japanese word. Let's use that." And it stuck. Very sad.
The English version uses the same tune and has a similar meaning, but has completely different words. Frank Perez did a wonderful version of the English lyrics on YouTube.
Then, I wanted to learn how to make sukiyaki, and I found your video. There are many versions, and I like yours. I will have to try it, with the raw egg, just as soon as I can find a place to buy shirataki and shungiko. It's not easy here in America.
By the way, I enjoy seeing us Tom's, Dick's, and Harry's do wonderful things. There are more of us than there are rich and famous people. You are not afraid to be yourself and have a nice sense of humor that comes through in your videos. We just want to thank you for helping us learn something new.
By the way, you have a nice singing voice.
